Summer Reading Programs for Teens and Tweens

SUMMER READING PROGRAM FOR GRADES 5 and UP

How to Participate

1.       Register for the Summer Reading Program (SRP) at the Summer Reading Kickoff on June 28th at 6:00 p.m. If you are unable to attend, you may register after the 28th in person or email your name, address, phone number, school, and entering grade to                                                                                  jamlibkids@gmail.com.

2.       Upon registering, you will receive a BINGO card that should be completed and returned to Miss Lisa by August 12th in order to complete the SRP.

3.       Participants who complete their BINGO card by the August 12th deadline are invited to the “On Your Mark, Get Set...Read! Finale Party” at the Library on Tuesday, August 16th at 6:00 p.m. Make your own ice cream sundae, hang out with your reading friends and win                                                                 some cool prizes!

4.       The fun continues when you go back to Lawn School! Turn your BINGO card in to your homeroom teacher during the first week of school and receive even more prizes for your                                                                        reading!

Come celebrate the beginning of Summer Reading by signing up for the SRP while having some fun! There will be pizza, beverages, crafts and Legos. Child, tween and teen readers are all invited to attend this event which serves as the official start of what we hope will be a very productive summer of reading in Jamestown!

Henna by Heather

Indian henna designs, also referred to as Mehndi, are especially significant for Indian women, although people of other cultures and nationalities incorporate the intricate designs of the tattoos into their celebrations as well.           Henna tattoos are created in a number of shapes and symbols. Come with an idea of what you’d like and Heather will help that idea become a beautiful reality!

Traditional Martial Arts RI

Get in the Game with TMARI for 45 - 60 minutes for a Complete Self-Defense Program. Our program will teach you how to protect yourself under a stressful environment. This class builds community and respect through games, and other activities encouraging and empowering teens to take risks, grow, and feel pride in their minds, bodies, and spirits. The beauty of our classes is that they are based on simple principles that can be learned and applied quickly and effectively.       
This class will be held on the library patio.

In this 2-hour program, led by CreativeChica, Jennifer Rolfsema (RISD alumni), patrons will be guided from start-to-finish to create a 8"x10" acrylic painting with a game, sport or activity related to the "Get in the Game: Read" theme.

Darts is a good game, and it's played throughout the world. But what if you not only had to hit the bullseye, but you also had to build your own "dart"* -launching machine or even the "dart"* itself? Now that's a game that involves both brains and muscle! Join RIMOSA to build your own mini catapult and see if you can use it to hit the bullseye! Take your creations home for further experiments.

Join Farm Fresh Rhode Island and learn how to make  delicious recipes that fuel a strong and active body.     Participants will learn how to read and prepare a recipe and other easy steps to success in the kitchen. A chef will lead the group in making the ultimate in fit & tasty food. Recipes include power bars, smoothies and other sensational snacks that feature RI Grown fruits & vegetables.

Minecraft Modding: Game On!

In this workshop, teens learn how to "mod" or change the Minecraft world with code! This workshop introduces coding concepts by showing students how to build in the game using the Python programming language on the Raspberry Pi, a low-cost credit card sized computer designed to promote computer education. We encourage youth to "get in the game" of learning about technology. This workshop promotes mental exercise and teamwork through our activity challenges. We will provide students with information on additional learning resources beyond the scope of our workshop.
